Fred Martin
Student Intern
Fred would have liked to be an AFL footballer when he grew up, but instead has become entangled in the Martin family web of numbers, business and commerce.
With the blending of the family’s business and personal relationships, Fred has been surrounded by Martin & Martin clients for most of his life. He has been a bystander in many conversations, taking in titbits and learnings from the business lives and worlds of diverse clients. Keen to link his academic learning with commercial application, Fred interns as the third generation of Martin’s working at Martin & Martin as he embarks on a Commerce degree at Melbourne University.
Fred’s first official job was delivering pizzas for Domino’s, before working the warehouse at Banter Toys packing Pokemon and Squishmallows and more recently tutoring maths and coaching Year 8 football – but his first foray into business didn’t start there.
Spending summers at an old weatherboard beach house in Blairgowrie, he recalls catching blue tongue lizards, dragons and skinks with his younger cousin. They popped the poor lizards into a cardboard box and charged beach goers $0.50 for a ‘viewing’ of these incredible reptiles and recalls having made $35 that summer day. Not bad takings for eight and five year old kids.
One of Fred’s most rewarding experiences was a 24 hour school hiking mission where he accomplished a huge feat of walking 103km. The 24 hour challenge had a greater purpose to raise money for a Children’s hospital in Africa. Fred ended up setting the record for highest money raised that year. Walking through the night, with the dew setting in and the only light coming from head torches and feeling exhausted, that’s when he says he found himself and what he was made of. Putting one foot in front of the other and just quietly ‘keeping on going’.
With a go-getter attitude to try new things and jobs, Fred is a bright spark that is driven and headstrong yet also quietly diplomatic and occasionally cheeky. His ability to connect with people and to find their motivations behind their actions will no doubt come in handy as he bolsters his learnings in the craft of commerce and business..
